Love the upcoming Nintendo’s gaming console, but hate its name? Well, you’re not alone. According to a source inside the company, they have received many negative reaction from the community regarding their decision to rename the Revolution to Wii. This, along with the marketing strategies, might caused the possible name change for Wii.
“We have received over 200,000 e-mails with complaints about the Wii, and the console name has been commonly associated with urine. We have been the target of many jokes, and we strongly believe that it’s a bad thing for the company’s reputation“, says Mike, who works at the marketing department of Nintendo.
Mike also mentioned that, from the recent poll result, people are not taking this new console very seriously. According to the result, 62% of gamers think “Wii” sounds childish, while 49% said they wouldn’t buy the console judging only by its name. Nintendo itself already received several suggested new names for Wii, such as Nintendo GameZone, Nintendo FutureNation and Nintendo GlobalBOX. However, the company denies this possible name change.
Personally, I have no problem at all with the Wii name. Yes, it sounds childish, but it still sounds cool and represents a unique gaming console. And since I’m currently prepare a Wii blog with a “Wii” phrase on the domain name, I definitely hope that Nintendo won’t rename this gaming console, again.
Nintendo Wii is planned to release on the fourth quarter of 2006 with less than $250 retail price.
